How to Crochet a Chain

The foundation for all other crochet stitches

Every crochet project starts here: with a loop pulled through a loop pulled through a loop.

How to do it:

Basic Principle:

You’ll be pulling one loop at a time through the previous loop with a crochet hook.

  1. Create a slip knot and insert your hook through the loop.

  2. Wrap the yarn in your non-dominant hand (the same as for Continental Knitting style) to create tension.

  3. Catch the yarn with the hook and pull it back through the loop.

  4. Repeat step three until you have the desired number of loops. One loop equals one stitch, including your original slip knot loop.

  5. Congrats! You’ve made a crochet chain!
